Many of us enjoy a cup of coffee when we wake up, or anytime throughout a busy work day. That’s because caffeine gives us a boost of energy to keep us going. For those who don’t like coffee and want something quick to feel a caffeine kick, they turn to caffeine pills, a popular way to boost focus and energy for the short term.

Some places sell these, like in health stores or online shops like Supplement First. But what do these pills contain and are they safe?

What are Caffeine Pills?

Caffeine is a stimulant drug increasing activity in our central nervous system. Tea and coffee are natural sources of caffeine, while manufacturers create caffeine-based products like energy bars, energy drinks, and sodas.

As for caffeine pills, these would contain either natural or synthetic forms of caffeine. The amount of caffeine would vary, depending on the brand. In most cases, caffeine pills would contain 100-200 mg per tablet, which is more than what most cups of coffee would contain but less in energy drinks.

For reference, one cup of coffee contains about 80-100mg while the same amount of energy drinks can contain anywhere between 40-250mg.  Note that people can take about 400mg of caffeine a day without negative side effects.

Are Caffeine Pills Safe?

Just like researching vitamins like Designs for Health in Supplement First, you want to know if these pills are safe.

In general, yes, caffeine pills are safe for most people, as long as they are taken in moderation and limit other sources of caffeine.

We say most people because some people are more sensitive to caffeine. Those who are more sensitive may experience negative reactions to the supplements compared to other caffeine sources. Here are the groups of people who are recommended to limit their caffeine intake:

  • If you are sensitive to the effects of caffeine
  • If you are trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • If you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, or acid reflux
  • Adolescents and children
  • Those who have regular migraines

Also, do note that caffeine pills aren’t pure caffeine powder, which is potentially dangerous and can cause toxic effects, like seizures. 0.15 tablespoons of caffeine powder contain about 1,200mg of caffeine.

Benefits and Risks of Caffeine Pills

Caffeine might have health benefits, though most research on it is focused on the caffeine from coffee. Here are the potential benefits:

  • Increased memory and focus
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Helps with headaches and migraines
  • Might reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

That said, there are risks and side effects to caffeine, particularly when taking large amounts. Such effects include:

  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Faster heart rate
  • Heartburn
  • Headache
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Shaking
  • Thirstiness
  • Sleeping issues

High quantities may cause a caffeine overdose! Moreover, too much caffeine daily can lead to caffeine dependency.

Wrapping It Up

Before you begin taking caffeine pills, consult with your doctor on their uses and if your current health allows you to take them.
